“SAAHA represents the manufacturers and suppliers of veterinary medicines, stock remedies and other animal health products.”

The South African Animal Health Association (SAAHA) started operating as a Non Profit Company on 1 January 2003. The Association, a "daughter" association under the umbrella of AVCASA - Association of Veterinary and Crop Associations, used to be a division of AVCASA but is now an autonomous Association representing 90 % of animal health product importers, manufacturers and suppliers in South Africa. It has 18 companies as members.

“SAAHA is controlled by an Executive Council consisting of nominated individuals from all ordinary member companies. The President of SAAHA is Andre Westerveld (Elanco SA) and the Vice President is Alan Kloeck (MSD Animal Health) . SAAHA is a member of the HealthForAnimals, a non-profit, non-governmental organization representing companies and industry associations from both developed and developing countries.

The Association serves the farmer/ end user of veterinary products by:

  • Ensuring that only quality products that are registered and fit for use are sold and distributed.
  • Through research and development internationally and locally, new and/or improved products are regularly put on the market.
  • Also looking after the interests of emerging farmers.
  • Conducting research into vector resistance in South Africa.
  • Ensuring that sales personnel are properly trained and accredited.


To act as the unified voice in liaison with stakeholders which have an impact on the animal health industry; to encourage and assist the development of predictable science-based regulatory processes and standards; to provide unique and quality service to our members and to promote and maintain adherence to a high level of ethics.


To promote and support an economically viable and innovation driven animal health industry, contributing to a healthy, secure and safe food supply through a high level of health and welfare of all animals and the environment.


Code of Conduct

All SAAHA members sign an agreement to comply with and to be bound by the SAAHA Code of Conduct. This code sets out the Industry and Trade standards for research, development, manufacturing, production, marketing, handling, warehousing and distribution including importation and/or exportation of animal health products as defined.

Code of Marketing Ethics

The SA Code of Marketing Ethics for Veterinary Pharmaceuticals aims at promoting and applying marketing practices that are accurate, unambiguous, factual and fair. Furthermore, the objective of this code is to ensure that the marketing of veterinary pharmaceuticals to veterinary and allied professionals and the general public is carried out in a responsible, ethical and professional manner, based on practical and scientifically validated information. It also aims to ensure that marketing activities encourage the rational use of veterinary medicines by veterinary and allied professionals and the general public.
